Abstract

The objective of this paper was to study the life expectancy at birth after the elimination of deaths related to infectious and parasitic diseases, circulatory, respiratory, cancer and external causes in Brazil between 1980 and 2010. In order to achieve the objectives proposed we used data from the Demographic Census of 1980, 1991, 2000 and 2010 and the Mortality Information System for the respective years. The analysis focused on the stages of transition in which there is a reduction of deaths from infectious diseases, it followed after a time of rise and subsequent decline of the importance of deaths from cardiovascular diseases and increase the incidence of deaths due to cancer. It was calculated the associated single decrement tables between the years 1980 and 2010, seeking to measure the impact on life expectancy under a scenario in which do not exist each of the mentioned causes of death. The results indicate that the causes of deaths linked to infectious and parasitic diseases have become really less important, while external causes and neoplasms have shown a higher incidence over the years in Brazil. From the understanding of the epidemiological transition can design an appropriate planning of public health policies.
