Abstract

BIS (Health Institute Bulletin) publishes research results and other types of articles in the field of public health. Special emphasis has been given to publicizing of works that can subsidize professionals of health inserted in the most diverse types of services that integrate the SUS. The present volume aims to generate a set of data and reflections through the use of databases demographic data and Health Information Systems for planning actions and health programs and for monitoring and evaluation of the interventions carried out. In order to explore the potential of using these rich data sources,
we are publishing the volume entitled “The contribution of databases demographic and information systems Health for SUS management ”.The Demographic Census, performed every ten years by IBGE, is the main source of Brazilian demographic information. Various themes investigated in this great research can be used in the planning and evaluation of health actions. The main health-related information present in the census are: distribution of the population
by sex and age, that make it possible to measure mortality and fertility, birth records, information about people with some kind of special need, detailed information about specific population groups and indicators for the knowledge of health determinants and conditions.
Next to the information produced by the Census, several health information systems play a strategic role in subsidy for the planning of health actions, monitoring and evaluating policies and programs,
controlling diseases and studying living conditions, illness and death of the population.
This set of information is a fundamental element for the organization and for the sustainability of the Public Health system.In this volume, we present articles and reflections that explore different possibilities analysis of data from the Demographic Census, indicating its advantages and limitations. Next to In addition, an overview of the Information Systems Health Information. The need for articulation between the various systems to improve the quality of information is also discussed by the authors of the articles.
