Abstract
This year, we celebrate 35 years of existence of Unified Health System (SUS). This public policy in defenseof the health and lives of Brazilians, guaranteed in our Citizen Constitution of 1988, is the result of a process of much struggle and dispute that took place in the Brazilian society from the 1970s onwards, with the Health Reform Movement and the Eighth Conference National Health Service, in 1986. This dispute remains up to
the present time, with regard to guarantees of social policies, including health as a right of citizenship and
duty of the State. The health reform and the conference were important for the theses and proposals that emerged
and were approved, but also because of the way they were constituted, with participation of workers and managers,
students and teachers in the health field and, mainly, representatives of social movements and society civil, in search of a system that was universal, equitable and integral. All these movements were essential
for the creation of the SUS and the process of reestablishment of democracy in Brazil. So, health and democracy
are inseparable goods and we have to fight to defend them permanently!
