Resumo
Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar ao leitor aspectos da atual discussão sobre células tronco embrionárias em nosso país. O texto foi preparado com base na apresentação realizada na XI Reunião Científica Anual do Instituto Butantan, realizada em 3 de dezembro de 2009 em São Paulo. O artigo mostra os passos dados até aqui, no sentido da incorporação científica e aponta para a necessidade de se ampliar a geração de conhecimentos, mediante o estabelecimento de redes de pesquisa.
