Abstract

Since Abraham Ortelius and Gerhard Mercator, the Atlas phenomenon spread throughout the world, reaching areas of knowledge and creation, and knowing throughout the nineteenth century a decisive moment. By bringing together the development of graphic reproduction techniques and the newdisciplines, the scientific atlas - Botanical, anatomical, anthropological etc. – is multiplied by visually organizing graphic elements to convey knowledge, making possible a particular form of knowledge articulated to the association of visual elements.
