Abstract
Butantan Institute preserves the formal letters sent by its first director Vital Brazil. These letters contain data about the day by day needs for the organization of the production of antiplague serum and vaccine. Requests to buy products and services for installation of stables and laboratories suitable for production provide details about the products and suppliers from 1900 to 1905, in São Paulo. Invoices recorded values of purchased products and services. The beginning of production, distribution and dissemination of antiophidic sera is also present in these documents. Five themes were chosen to describe the letters: infrastructure; research and scientific questions; gathering, purchase and exchange of snakes; production and distribution; divulgation.
