Abstract

The objective was to explore the knowledge of preconception preparation and to describe the reasons why women with planned pregnancies did not perform the preconception preparation public health services. Descriptive study conducted in two health center schools of Sao Paulo with pregnant women or woman that were pregnant in the last five years. Data collection was conducted through face-to-face interviews in 2015. Data analysis was performed using Stata 13.0. The participants were 302 women. The majority of them were unaware of preconception care (64,6%) and some ignored that health services offered this care (16.2%). The main source of information among women who were aware of preconception care were relatives and friends (44.0%) and the best known preconception measure was the use of vitamins and minerals (22,2%). The main reason for not performing the preconception preparation was being unaware of preconception care and how to access it.
