Abstract

There are many harms caused by the early interruption of the breastfeeding for child health and, in terms of nutritional status, the situation can be aggravated by non-adequacy of the weaning diet. The WHO -World Health
Organization- recommends that children are exclusively breastfed by six months (which substantially reduces the
risks of infections and infant deaths in this period), and should continue to receive breast milk until at least
the two years old. In Brazil, despite studies showing a tendency increase in the practice of breastfeeding in the
last three decades, there is no lack of evidence that protective actions, breastfeeding promotion and support should be intensified, since we are far from reaching the targets proposed by the WHO.
