Abstract
This qualitative study aimed at describing the perceptions, meanings and attitudes, of young adults (18 to 29 years old) who live, study and/or work in Franco da Rocha, in relation to the obligation and consequences of social distancing, during
COVID-19 pandemic. Five semi-structured interviews were conducted. The following categories and subcategories were
defined, through Content Analysis of the interviews: (1) “Social distancing practices” (subcategories: “Health” and “Work and
income”); (2) “Non-adherence to social distancing practices” (“Risk perception”, “Social inequalities”) and (3) “Suggestions for coping with the pandemic” (“Inspection”; “Equitable policies”; “Popular participation”). All participants stated that social distancing is relevant to controlling the spread of COVID-19, but highlighted that society's adherence depends on public policies to reduce negative socioeconomic impacts. The results suggest that the interviewees felt excluded from the discussions and wanted to participate in the planning of actions, which is a factor that promotes adherence to the measures proposed by the health authorities.
