Abstract

The study aim was to trace the evolution profile in the prevalence of suicides and attempted suicides in the State of São Paulo from 2003 to 2010, according to sex, and in 2003 and 2010, according to age. It was considered cases registered in Datasus within the large group ICD10: X60-X84 - self-harm. Data on mortality and morbidity in patients over 10 years old from 2003 to 2010 according to sex and in 2003 and 2010 according to age group were collected. The rates were calculated per 100,000 population. It was found that although the rate of deaths by suicide is higher among men, its growth over the years has been higher among women. Regarding age, it was found, between 2003 and 2010, an increase of mortality rates, mainly 10-14 years old and 20-39 years old, and a decrease in people from 50 years old. As for suicide attempts, the data showed irregular in the period, but with greater gender balance. It concludes the need for increased investment in the training of health professionals, both for prevention and care, and for the appropriate referral of cases of people with depression and suicidal thoughts.
