Abstract
Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has revolutionized clinical mycology by significantly reducing the time required for fungal identification, increasing diagnostic accuracy, and enabling more targeted antifungal therapies. Based on ribosomal protein analysis, the method is used across various commercial platforms. Despite its advancements, it still faces limitations in identifying cryptic species, multidrug-resistant fungi, and hospital-acquired infections caused by Candida auris and Aspergillus spp. Its effective use requires trained professionals, standardized protocols, regularly updated databases, and proper equipment maintenance.
