Abstract

The authors reported an outbreak of leptospirosis during June and July, 1966, following severe floods that afflicted the city of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. From the one hundred eight-one cases reported, one was confirmed by necropsy and the remaining by sero-aglutinations tests conducted in the Instituto Adolfo Lutz, of São Paulo, Brazil. The predominant leptospire was L. icterohaemorrhagiae found in one hundred and seventy cases, followed by L. australis (five cases), L. pomona (three cases), and L. andamana (two cases). The symptoms observed were described and coments made, regarding the frequency of each symptom; the mortality rate was 3.3 per cento.
