Abstract
Twelve cases of meningitis by Listeria monocytogenes occurring between December, 1975 and August, 1977 are reported for patients admitted to the infectious diseases hospital "Emílio Ribas", of São Paulo, Brazil. Spinal fluid
sediment revealed Gram positive bacilli in 2 out of 10 specimens. Twelve strains of
L. monocytogenes were isolated and identified and the serotyping (carried out at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute, Rio de Janeiro) showed that 10 strains belonged to serotype L4b and 2 strains to serotype L4a. The resistance to antimicrobial agents was
tested.
