Abstract

A study of the hepati tis B surface antigen (HBsAg) prevalence was carried out in 17,401 blood-bank donors from the city of São Paulo using
radíoímmuneassay (RIA) and reverse passive hemagglutination (R-PHA) tests. The resulta were 1.270/0 and 1.130/0, respectively, with a correlation of 89.140/0 between the two techniques. Detection of hepatitis Be antigen (HBeAg) and the respective antibody (anti-HBe) was ma de in 139 HBsAg positive sera by means of agarose gel ímmunodíffuaion test (AGID). A positivity of 7.20/0 for the antigen and 280/0 for the antíbody was obtained. The presence of both markers ín the same serum specimen was not observed. Four hundred specimens were selected among the HBsAg nega tive sera to study the prevalence of the antibody against HBsAg (anti-HBs) and hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) by radioimmunoassay. The resulta showed that 7.250/0 were positive for anti-HBs only, 4.50/0 for anti-HBc,
and 10.50/0showed both rnarkers. A more careful study of sera positive for anti-HBc only, would be necessary since it is still questionable whether these specimens may represent a transrnission risk for the post-transfusion Hepatitis B.
