Abstract

Commonly employed laboratory tests for detection of the hepatitisB surface antigen show low sensitivity or are cumhersome to car ry out. With the reverse passive haemagglutination (RPHA) technic, there is no such problems, and the test is very sensitive and easy to carrv out. The results of three tests, counterimmunoelectrophoresis
radioimmunoassay (RIA) and RPHA were compared. The
sera were from patients suspected of viral hepatitis as well as from blood donors. The purification of HBsAg to obtaín the an ti-sera and the sensitization of red cells were done in this laboratary. These red cells have not shown any
significant difference with the red cell control and there was no alteration of their
sensitivity after 6 mon ths at 4°C. The agreement between RIA and RPHA was 810/0.
With this procedure, public health laboratories can prepare a reagent at low price for a simple sensitive test which may be extremely useful for evidenciation of HBsAg in patients and in blood-bank donors.
