Manuscript Presentation and Text Structure

The paper should be written in Portuguese (BR), without the letterhead or identification of the institution and/or the authors; double spacing, font 12; insert the figures and tables in the text, they must also be sent in an editable file in a separate attachment (see details in the item Illustrations). Original articles, systematic reviews/meta-analyses and quick communications must be presented according to the Vancouver norms structure: (I) title; authors and institutions; (II) abstract; (III) introduction; (IV) methodology; (V) results; (VI) discussion and (VII) conclusion; (VIII) acknowledgements (optional); (IX) references; and (X) tables, figures and images (when applicable).

  1. Article Title: must be concise, specific and descriptive, in Portuguese and English.
  2. Abstract: Inserted at the beginning of the text, it must contain a succinct and clear description    of the study's purpose, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion. The maximum number  of words is specified in each type of manuscript.

Keywords (descriptors or uniterms): at the end of the abstract, a minimum of three and a maximum of six keywords must be indicated. In Portuguese, the keywords should be extracted from the Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS) vocabulary, from Bireme; in English, from Medical Subject Headings. If no adequate keywords are found for the subject matter, everyday terms or expressions may be used.

  1. Introduction: started on a new page, it should contextualize the study, the nature of the issues addressed, and their significance. It should be short, should define the problem studied, summarize its importance, and highlight the gaps in the knowledge covered.
  2. Methodology (Methods): must contain a clear and succinct description, accompanied by the respective bibliographical citation, by the procedures adopted, the population studied (universe and sample), measurement instruments and, if applicable, the validation and statistical methods.
  3. Results: must be presented in logical sequence in the text, inserting the main or most important findings first. The results found should be described without including interpretations and/or comparisons.
  4. Discussion: should begin with an appreciation of the study's limitations, followed by comparison with the literature and the authors' interpretation, adequately and objectively exploring the results.
  5. Conclusion: should present the relevant conclusions, considering the objectives, and indicate ways to continue the work.
  6. Acknowledgements: must be directed to people and institutions that contributed to the work, but do not meet the authorship criteria.
  7. References: listed at the end of the paper, they must be numbered according to the order in which they are cited in the text. The number of references should be limited to that defined for each type of manuscript accepted by the BEPA.

References should be normalized according to the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals (Vancouver). For references whose examples are not contemplated in this text, consult the Guia de Apresentação de Teses - Modelo para Referências (Thesis Presentation Guide - Model for References) of the Faculdade de Saúde Pública/USP or Citing Medicine, 2nd edition.

According to Vancouver standards, journal titles are abbreviated as they appear in the US National Library of Medicine's PubMed Database under Journals Database. Consultation of Brazilian and Latin American journal titles can be performed at the Portal de Revistas da Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (Journal Portal of the Virtual Health Library).

Cases not covered in these instructions should be cited as indicated by the Committee of Medical Journals Editors (Vancouver Group).

They must be editable (DOC, XLS or PPT), presented in a separate file, and numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals, in the order they are cited in the text. Each one should be given a short title. Explanatory notes should be limited to as few as possible and inserted at the bottom of tables and charts, not in the heading or title. Files cannot be submitted in image format.

Figures

Photographs, images, drawings, etc., cited as figures, should be presented with editable content, in original size saved in JPEG, TIFF, PNG or EPS format; numbered consecutively, in Arabic numerals, in the order they are mentioned in the text, by number and abbreviated title in the paper. The legends should be presented according to the tables. The illustrations must be clear enough to allow reproduction, in a resolution of at least 300 DPI.

Note:

1-The titles of graphical elements should appear above tables, figures, charts, and graphs.  Acronyms, abbreviations, or technical terms should be inserted below, without boldface. The source should be the last information to be included.

2- Tables, illustrations, and other graphic elements should be sharp and legible, in high resolution. If they have already been published, mention the source and attach permission for reproduction. The number of graphic elements is limited to that defined in each type of manuscript accepted by the BEPA. Acronyms, when cited for the first time, should be explained.
