Abstract

On September 7, 2007, the Hospital Benedito Montenegro at the city of São Paulo (MSP) notified 10 foodborne intoxication cases with one death among workers of a supermarket in the east zone, who had their meals at the restaurant of this establishment, from 3 to 7 September. This report summarizes the investigation which permitted the identification of 39 cases among 170 persons (incidence rate = 23%) and various prepared foods as source of contamination, offered during distinct days, stored at room temperature, including leftovers of the days before. Toxins of Bacillus cereus (enterotoxin) and Clostridium perfringens type A were identified in stool samples of six patients. The death was diagnosed as meningococcal disease, confirmed by laboratorial tests (N. meningitidis serogroup C). Sanitary measures were taken for outbreak control, such as interdiction of the establishment restaurant and technique
