Abstract

The first results obtained by the Surveillance System for Domestic, Sexual and other interpersonal violence  implanted in the State of São Paulo surpassed expectations, since reports received were issued by 12 Regional  Health Branches, 64 cities and 135 sentinel services. The objective of this paper is to describe violence against  children and adolescents reported in this System. We analyzed 776 report sheets, in which the victims were  under 18 year olds. Variables analyzed were sex, age, kind of violence, place of occurrence and the relationship  between victim/aggressor. Female sex was predominant, accounting for 473 cases (61,0%) and male sex  registered 298 cases (38,4%). Ratio females/males encountered was 1,6. Average age was 8,4 years. Results  regarding the kind of violence reported showed that negligence and sexual abuse/violence were predominant,  accounting for 264 (34,0%) and 261 cases (33,6%) respectively. Another 146 cases were classified as physical  violence (24,9%). Place of occurrence registering the higher number of cases was the home of the victims (413;  53,2% of the total), followed by the streets with 87 cases (11,5%). These results disclose the characteristics in  which violence against children and adolescents occurs and may offer significant contribution to public policies  designed to prevent such cases and offer support to the victims.
