Abstract

The importance of external causes as determinants for hospital admission has been increasingly proved. The       objective of this paper is to analyze hospital morbidity due to accidents and violence among people dwelling in the       State of São Paulo admitted in the public health system. We analyzed the 196.640 hospital admissions due to external       causes occurring in the State of São Paulo in 2005. In order to be able to perform tendency analysis, we analyzed the       period from 1998 to 2005. Data employed was obtained from the Hospital Information System. Hospital morbidity       coefficient, for the year 2005, was 501,1/100.000 (119,0/100.000 for men and 300,6/100.000 for women). The older       age brackets, with people aged 60 years and older, presented the highest coefficients. Falls represented 48,2% of the       hospital admissions, transportation accidents represented 17,1% of the total, aggressions registered 6,9% and self       inflicted lesions were 1,3% of the total. Analysis of the historic series showed a tendency of 9,3% increase in the rates       of hospital admissions due to such causes between 1998 and 2005, especially due to the increase in falls and       aggressions. Results indicate that prevention of accidents and violence must be included in the agenda of priorities of       the diverse governmental instances.
