Abstract
Prevention of accidents and violence is a subject that raises concern for public health. The municipality of Praia Grande is accompanying data on morbidity and mortality due to these causes. This article is designed to analyze deaths due to external causes in the municipality of Praia Grande, sharing this information with health professionals and other interested social sectors. This is a descriptive study, and information was collected from death declarations, comprised between 2000 and 2005. Major results show a decrease of circa 70% in mortality rates due to external causes during this period, especially related to the drop in homicide rates - 104,9 in 2000 and 17,2 in 2005. Mortality rates due to external causes in the city of Praia Grande reaches a coefficient of 96,3/100.000 for males. Major incidences are registered in the 15 top 59 age bracket, with peaking in the 20 to 29 year olds range. Homicides are the top cause, for the investigated period. In 2005, second place was attributed to traffic accidents and, after that, deaths by drowning. The city of Praia Grande has developed public actions to face causes of violence which were determinant to the reduction of mortality due to external causes.
