Abstract

Pertussis is currently considered an important public heath problem in developed countries. Besides high vaccine coverage, a raise in incidence coefficients (a coefficient of incidence raise) for all age groups has been observed. This epidemiological situation demands new epidemiological strategies, like, for example, the use of a cellular vaccine in adolescents and young adults. At the same time, in Brazil, there is no evidence of whooping cough recrudescence, even because the introduction of massive immunization happened very recently in this country as compared to the developed ones. The present work is a descriptive study of whooping cough epidemiological situation during (in) the past seven years (1999-2005), based on suspected and confirmed cases notified by cities located within the Regional Health Department of DIR XV - Piracicaba.
