Abstract

Since the start, in 2004, the epidemiological surveillance system for Hospital Infections in the State of São Paulo has produced original data on hospital infection (IH) and assisting specific actions designed for prevention and control of IH in the State. Hospital adhesion to the reporting system and regularity in data input are increasing. Epidemiologic indicators evaluated presented small variations during these years, suggesting the consistency of presented data. Some of the major objectives of the Epidemiologic System for the Surveillance of Hospital Infections in the State of São Paulo were achieved: adhesion and data consistency. The next challenge is to stimulate data analysis by regional and municipal representatives designed for IH. Therefore, actions of prevention and control on IH may be developed at proper occasion and according to local realities.
