Abstract
Instituto Clemente Ferreira has developed a Project designed to offer attention to childhood asthma, reaching satisfactory results. The objective is to start the discussion on asthma as public health problem. In this study, 15 patients under 14 years old were evaluated, in order to verify the repercussion of the program in the factors determining life quality of these children. We evaluated the number of hospital admittances, frequency of bronchopneumonias and the number of asthma crisis they presented. Before enrolling in the program, average hospital admittances was 3,2 episodes per patient; after the first year in the program, registers decreased to zero. Frequency of bronchopneumonias decreased from 1,8 episodes for 0,06 episodes/patient after the start of the program. These patients had an average of 18,7 crisis episodes, decreasing to 2,2 episodes. These data show that the introduction of a specific program to address a chronic pathology that has been receiving little attention in the universe of the Single Health System is crucial to determinate an improvement of life quality of patients and a decrease in the morbidity rates.
