Abstract
This study reports the presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in samples of treated water used in the dialysis solution in eight Renal Replacement Therapy Units in four cities of the northwest region of São Paulo state; and the isolated strains were analyzed on the resistance profile by antimicrobial susceptibility testing. From 2000 to 2009, 508 samples were analyzed following Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater (2005). P. aeruginosa was isolated from 43 (8.5%) samples, and 55.8, 23.3 and 20.9% of them were from white room, post-osmosis/deionizer point and yellow room of different units, respectively. The A Unit water samples have showed the highest bacterium isolation frequency (53.5%); and the detection of the highest number of contaminated samples (16.7%) occurred in 2004. Of all the 43 isolates, 38 were submitted to the antimicrobial susceptibility testing; an intermediate resistance to gentamicin in one sample (2.6%) and resistance to aztreonam and ticarcillin / clavulanic acid in another (2.6%) were identified. Considering the implications of P. aeruginosa to the public health, this survey of bacterium should be included in monitoring water quality for hemodialysis and this procedure might be an indicator for evidencing deficiencies on the water distribution network control.
