Abstract

This study evaluated the efficiency of plasmas from rabbits, cattle, horses, dogs and humans for improving the coagulase test performance on Staphylococcus strains isolated from bovine mastitis (n=174), human (n=71) and dogs (n=70). The readings of the tests readings were performed after different incubation periods. Leporine plasma showed the best results in the coagulation tests, excepting on the bacteria strains isolated from dogs. To these strains, the equine plasma showed the best results in the first 12 hours of incubation and the rabbit plasma exhibited similar results after 12 hour of incubation. No strain, with a negative result for the rabbit plasma, reacted positively to the other animal plasmas. Rabbit and equine plasmas exhibited the best results to the bacterial isolates with human and bovine origins. Low efficiency was evidenced in performing the assays when using the plasmas of the homologous species from the strain that was isolated. Coagulation of leporine plasma occurred within two hours of incubation in 92% of bovine strains. According ours results, the equine plasma might be used for performing the coagulase tests in Staphylococcus isolates from dogs, cattle and humans, and getting similar results to those provided by the rabbits plasma.
