Abstract

This study evaluated the epidemiological, clinical, diagnostic and treatment aspects of breast cancer in men, which is rarely frequent and few investigations are reported in the literature. We looked over the scientific publications in databases such as BIREME - Virtual Health Library that allows the access to the Lilacs (Latin-American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature), and also to the database PUBMED (National Library of Medicine U.S.). The breast cancer represents less than 1% of all cancers in males, nevertheless the occurrence of this cancer tends to increase due to poor quality of life and difficulty in performing an early diagnosis. Its incidence significantly increased from 0.86 to 1.06 per 100,000 men over the past 26 years. The highest rates are found in North America and Europe and the lowest rates in Asia. It is known that men have overall the worst rates of survival when compared to women, probably due to the breast cancer diagnosis in men being done when they are older, just at time of much more advanced disease stage, and also owing to the death rates by co-morbid diseases. The accurate diagnosis and prevention are the best strategies to make an improvement upon life quality and survival of patient with this malignancy.
