Abstract

The quality of the water consumed by the population of the District of Sana - Macaé , RJ was assessed by means of microbiological analyses for detecting thermotolerant and total coliforms and heterotrophic bacteria based on Ministry of Health Decree nº 518/2004. The water consumed by the population of Arraial of Sana is supplied from captation in watershed of Palmital and in watershed of Glória. Both watersheds a restored in distinct reservoirs (reservoir of Palmital and reservoir of Glória), and the water was distributed to population without any treatment. At each season, three samples were collected from each reservoir. For performing the captation, due to difficult of access to them, one sample was collected by season. The following microbiological analyses were carried out: detection of total coliform and thermotolerant coliform by NMP method using multiple tubes technique, and of heterotrophic bacteria counting in accordance to methodology recommended by APHA. High bacteria contamination was found, in rates above of those acceptable limits established in Decree n° 518/2004, and the water from Glória showed higher levels of contamination than the sample from Palmital. The present study indicates the low microbiological quality of the water samples consumed in the District of Sana, Macaé-RJ, owing to the lack of previous treatment before the water being distributed to population.
