Abstract
The authors, in 1948, searched for the frequency of leptospirae in 259 rats belonging to the variety R. norvegicus, in the city of São Paulo. As diagnostic method they employed Fletcher's medium in which kidney was implanted. They found 39 infested rats which corresponds to 15,05% positive results. In 1949 the authors examined 85 rats captured in the city of Santos and belonging to the species R. frugivurus, R. rattus, R. norvegicus. Six of them were infested, therefore 6,35% positive findings. Every one of the isolated samples of leptospirae was identified through agglutination tests and proved to be of the L. icterohaemorrhagiae species.
