Abstract

The authors report their observations on the finding of intestinal parasites and bacteria of human origin in flies. A review of the most representative papers on the subject is presented, The data for this paper was obtained in São Paulo during ten successive months, starting on November, 1956. The results of 180 captures in homes and their immediate surroundings show that Musca domestica is the most frequent species, representing 98.91 percent of the flies captured. One hundred and eighty five lots were examined, with a total of 5,781 specimens of Musca domestica. In different occasions, they found: cysts of Iodamoeba butschlii, Escherichia coli 086 in one occasion and Micrococcus pyogenes var. aureus in another. Attention is called to the rarity of finding intestinal bacteria and parasites in the material studied. The authors suggest that in normal conditions Musca domestica is not an important agent in the transmission of human enteric infections.
