Abstract
Human leptospirosis was confirmed in the city of Belém, Pará State, Brazil. Eight cases were diagnosed, six due to L. icterohaemorrhagiae, one to L. canicola and one to L. australis A. Two fatal cases due to infection with L. icterohaemorrhagiae were recorded. Serological examination of sylvatic animals gave negative results for thirtyfour birds. Antibodies to L. panama were detected in a single specimen of Proechimys sp, and to L. tarassovi in a single specimen of Phylander opossum in a total of ten rodents and seventeen marsupial examined. Studies on eleven primatas revealed the presence of soro-agglutinins to L. tarassavi in Cebus sp., L. grippotyphosa in Simiri sp. and L. djasimani in Sanguinus midas.
