Abstract

The comparative analysis was performed among the different protocols proposed for diagnosing the canine visceral leishmaniasis in the seroepidemiological surveys performed in the region of São José do Rio Preto, from 2008 to 2012. Each protocol evaluated the total number of processed tests, the mean time for examining the collected samples, in different periods, and the gross agreement analysis. Four protocols were used: diagnosis only by indirect immunofluorescence test (IFT), in 12,871 (28.4%) dogs samples; by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and IFT in 632 (1.4%); (ELISA/IFT) in 22,387 (49.4%) and the rapid test (RT) Dual Path Platform (DPP®)/ ELISA in 9,453 (20.8%). In the first two groups, the tests were performed using eluates from blood collected in the filter paper, and in the two last employed serum samples. RT-DPP®/ELISA demanded less time (days), from the test starting until the results release. In the of gross agreement rates, RT-DPP®/ELISA showed the best performance (58.5%). Although the new protocol RT-DPP®/ELISA has contributed to decrease in the mismatch between ELISA and IFT results, ELISA confirms less than 60% of RT-DPP® reagent samples, indicating the need for searching the new alternatives for the canine diagnosis.
