Abstract

The use of high concentrated standard solutions for the determination of metals has been one of the main
reasons for the production of hazardous wastes containing heavy metals in laboratories. To eliminate the
environmental problems associated with hazardous waste disposal a correct waste management has been
required. In the proposed procedure acid solutions containing metals as Hg(II), Pb(II), Cd(II) were treated
with 0.1 mol/L Fe(III) at pH 8.5. The precipitate containing the toxic metals was dried and mixed with cement/sand (3:1). In this procedure, fixation agents react with heavy metals to form a stable and no harmful product that will not leach out in acid solutions, permitting its disposal in a non-hazardous way.
