Abstract

Simultaneous infection by dengue viruses in the same patient may occur during epidemics in which
multiple dengue virus serotypes circulate. In 1996, this occurrence was reported for the first time in Brazil in Miranda, MS, and afterwards in Barretos, SP in 2001. In both instances the dengue viruses 1 and 2 were isolated. In 2003, in Itapevi - a town located in the Great São Paulo area, another evidence was reported. Viruses isolation was carried out in C6/36 cells culture, and identified by means of indirect immunofluorescence test, employing monoclonal antibodies produced for four Dengue serotypes. Dengue 1 and 3 were isolated, and they were confirmed by RT/PCR. For performing this technique, the RNA extracted from infected cells culture supernatant was employed. The data obtained from the present study corroborate the relevance of viral isolation for dengue epidemiological surveillance strategies, as it may
give support in determining the frequency of infections with multiple serotypes, and also to investigate whether these infections might be associated with the severity degree of disease.
