Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess the laboratory tests employed for pulmonary tuberculosis diagnosis in HIV positive patients with suspected pulmonary tuberculosis (Tb) and other mycobacteria, who were attended at the AIDS REFERENCE CENTER, Santos-SP (CRAIDS), from January 1997 to December 2000. Analyzing 1662 sputum samples, 288 (17.3%) were positive being 169 (58.7%) by means of microscopy
and culture technique, 103 (35.8%) by means of culture technique, and 16 (5.5%) by microscopy. Of positive samples, 216 (75%) represented as the first sample, thus  corresponding with the notification of the period. Among them, Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex was isolated in 191 (88.4%) samples, and other mycobacterias were detected in 25 (11.6%). The major occurrence of pulmonary tuberculosis was in male (71%) HIV co-infected patients of the age varying from 30 to 40 years old (47%). This study shows that the culture procedure and typification of mycobacteria are necessary for the pulmonary tuberculosis
diagnosis in HIV positive patients in addition to microscopy technique. We believe that this study is one
most remarkable subsidy for epidemiological knowledge on AIDS-Tb co-infection, since 11.5% of positive samples were due to atypic mycobacteria , and 35,8% were paucibacilar.
