Abstract
From january to december, 1988, 865 serum samples and 475 cerebrospinal fluid - CSF samples from patients with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome - AIDS were evaluated for the presence of antibodies to Herpes simplex virus - HSV and cytomegalovirus - CMV, using, respectively, indirect immunofluorescence and complement fixation techniques. From lhe received samples, 87.4% carne from males and 65.7% carne from people aged 20 to 39 years old. 61.5% of the serum samples and 7.5% of lhe CSF samples showed HSV antibodies. Detection of CMV antibodies revealed positive results in 42.6% serum samples and 2.7% CSF samples. Comparative analysis between these serum data and the results obtained from normal population (according to medical literature) showed a diminished frequency of antibodies in the studied group (p < 0.05). The presence of specific antibodies to herpes simplex virus or cytomegalovirus in the CSF of the patients with AIDS suggests a possible infection of the Central Nervous System by these viruses.
