Abstract

The study of 354 purulent conjunctivitis in children under 10 years old in the region of Campinas, SP, had the aim of finding the presence of Haemophilus influenzae biogroup aegyptius, the etiologic agent of the Brazilian Purpuric Fever in this population. Among the 264 bacteria identified, this organism was shown in 16,29%, Haemophilus influenzae in 34,09%, Staphylococcus aureus in 10,61%, and Staphylococcus sp in 14,39%. Most of these cases occurred between the age groups from 0 (zero) to 2 years (60,27%). The seasonal distribution showed a prevalence of Haemophilus influenzae in cold season and of Haemophilus influenzae biogroup aegyptius in warm season.
