Abstract
ln the period of 1978-1997, 413 Salmonella strains isolated from stool cultures of ambulatory and nosocomial origin were identified in the Microbiology Departament of the Regional Laboratory I - DIR-XVI of Presidente Prudente, SP. It was determined the antimicrobial susceptibility of 394 Salmonella strains. Among strains isolated from ambulatorial patients, it was observed a great diversity of serotypes (27 serotypes) with predominancy of S. Enteritidis (24,4%), S. Infantis (19,3%) and S. Agona (10,1 %). In respect to the strains isolated from hospitalized patients, it was identified 8 different serotypes and S. Typhimurium represented the prevalent serotype (95,6%), followed by S. Typhi (1%) and S. I 4,12: i : -(1%). Conceming to the susceptibility pattem to the antimicrobial agents, the hospitalized patient strains
showed multiple resistance, whereas those from non-hospitalized patients were susceptible to the majority of the drugs tested.
