Abstract
Immunologic tests were conducted in 22 patients with lep tospirosis who had been admitted to Couto Maia Hospital, Salvador, state of Bahia, Brazil. Cutaneous allergy was disclosed through intradermal injection of 0.1 ml of a suspension of inactivated.leptospiras, 91% of the patients giving a positive reaction. Immunofluorescence tests conducted in skin biopsies made in 5 patients
as well as the pathologic picture suggested delayed type IV hypersensitivity. Electrophoresis showed increase of IgG and IgM and a reduction of serum comple-
ment Clq and C3 • Immunoelectrophoresis disclosed a reduction of pre-albumin, increase of IgM and IgG, besides a marked increase of alpha-2-macroglobulin. These findings sugest a participation of immunity mechanisms in the pathogenesis of leptospirosis.
