Abstract

Continuous-line cultures of hamster kidney cells (BHK-21) was found to be a more rapid and sensitive procedure for isolation of mumps virus as compared with the embryonated chicken egg procedure. BHK-21 cells can be easily maintained in the virus labotory, thus contrasting with similarly sensitive primary cells of monkey kidney wh ich are difficult to obtain and cannot be maintained. Use of BHK-21 cell cultures for the isolation of mumps virus seems to be a useful alterna tive procedure.
