Abstract

Serotyping of 25,022 isolates of Salmonella sp, from human and non-human sources disclosed 124 serotypes. Of the 15,892 strains of human origin, 82 serotypes were disclosed. S. typhimurium, S. agona and S. typhi prevailed with
frequencies of 69.34%, 16.11% and 3.03%, respectively. Of the 9130 isolates from non-human sources, S. infan.tie, S. agona and S. typhimurium represented 14.28%, 14.18% and 10.58%, respectively, but a total of 103 serotypes were found. Although S. typhimurium is the most frequent serotype, S. agona, isolated for the first time in 1974 in São Paulo is, at the present time, the second serotype in frequency. The biochemical study of some isolates (mostly from non-human sources) disclosed serotypes and monophasic variants whose atypical biochemical properties differ
from classic findings in the classification of the genus Salmonella. into four subgenera.
