Abstract

The number of T Iymphocytes, B Iymphocytes and T Iymphocytes forming E rosette stable at 37°C was determined in a g roup of 140 patierrts with
clinical and laboratory diagnosis of acute hepatitis attended in a hospital for infectious diseases of. the City of São Paulo between October 1981 and IvIay 1982. Serological tests for antigens andjor antibodies for hepatitis A and B viruses disclosed that 37.80/0of the patients had A hepatitis and 50.70/0had B hepatitis, while 11.50/0were nega tive for hepatitis A or B and were thus considered as undetermined hepatitis. The number of Iymphocytes was determined on the day of clinical diagnosis and later at 60 and 360 days. The number of T lymphocytes was increased in most patients with hepatitis A or B but returned to normal levels 60 or 360 days in the patients with undetermined hepatitis. B lymphocytes were normal in the majority of patients, irrespective of time or hepatitis type. No significant alteration of T lymphocytes forming E rosette stable at 37°C was observed in most patients during the whole period of study. Some interpretations are ma de of the relationships between lymphocyte levels and the type and form of acute hepatitis.
