Abstract

A new cell line of calf kidney was isolated and has been cultivated for the last three years. The new line has fibroblast-like appearance with slight alterations since isolation. Cell multiplication indéx is higher between the 4th and 6th days of growth. Chromosomic analysis of passages ns. 50 to 55 indicated that the initially diplioid cells became heteroploids. The new line showed itself to
be capable of supporting the growth of the viruses tipe 1 herpes simplex, vaccinia, vesicular stomatitis, cow-pox and Ilhéus virus. Comparison of these resulta with those obtained with celllines such as AVa, Vero, HEp2' BHK-21 and RC-IAL disclosed that the new celI line is adequate for virus studies.
