Abstract

Levels of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) were determined in 51 serum
specimens from people living in an area where Chagas disease was being controlIed by house spraying with HCH to destroy the insect vectors: Panstrongyllus megistus, Triatoma sordida and Triatoma infestans. Samples were a!so col!ected from 28 persons whose houses had not been sprayed. There was a significant difference between the two groups, In the treatment
group, the minimum was leveI found was Il'g/di (ppb) and the maximum was 351'g/dl (ppb) with a median of 10 I'g/dl (ppb). In the people from unsprayed houses, the minimum was 1 ug/ dI (ppb). The test was performed by gas-liquid chromatography. The presence of pp' DDE in all the 51 specimens and Dieldrin in 22 of them was detected. The results indicate that serum specimens from people living in the area contained organochlorine pesticides other than HCH. With the exception of two levels of HCH, all these results are below the limits of biological tolerance established by Brazilian laws for these pesticides.
