Abstract

During the period from February, 1984 to April, 1987, 771 stool samples from AIDS patients and individuaIs belonging to risk groups for HIV infection were examined, in the Enteroparasitosis Section of Adolfo Lutz Institute, in São Paulo, Brazil. As control group,
432 stool samples from patients who demanded primary medical care in Health Centers, in the same period, were used. The results showed high prevalence of infection with Cryptosporidium sp., Entamoeba histo/ytiea and Isospora bel/i among AIDS patients and the individuals belonging to risk groups for HIV infection. Strongyloides stereoralis larvae were, also, significantly more frequent in stool samples from AIDS patients, when compared to control group, not infected with HIV.
