Abstract
Oils of transformers may contain polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). They have been used in Brazil and elsewhere during the past 40 years for several industrial and consumer aplications. During lhe last years, it has been aceumulated evidence ta indicate that PCBs are widely dispersed throughout lhe environment , and that they have ecological and toxicological effects. In this paper 150 transformer mineral samples from various states of Brasil were collected to monitar PCBs. The analysis showed that 66,70/0 of samples had levels of PCBs in Aroclor lower than 50,(lO mg/kg, and 33,0% of the levels were up to 782 x 103 mg/kg.
