Abstract

Blood and stool samples from 580 schooIchildren living in São Caetano do Sul, São Paulo State, Brazil, were examined to test the hypothetical correlation between the prevalence of giardiasis and populational distribution by blood group (ABO System). The stool examination showed that 102 (17.59%) students were infected by Giardia lamblia, 166 (28.62%)
presented other enteroparasitosis and 312 (53.79%) did not present any parasitic infection. The distribution by blood group of the students with giardiasis did not vary significantIy (p<0,05) in relation to the same distribution of others populational groups selected as standard, by means of control: the complex whole of students incIuded in this investigation and the population of São Paulo and Santo André cities. Such results differ from those established by others scientifical comunications, and show the necessity of new and more extensive populational inquiries that should definitely confirm or reject the hypothesis in questiono.
