Abstract
A total of 229 cases identified clinically as of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis were recorded in various localities on the Ribeira Valley, state of São Paulo, Brazil. Laboratory confirmation (identification of the parasite) was obtained for 28.4 % of the cases. It was noted that 80 o/c of the patients had occupa tio ns such as domestic, scholar, teacher or pre-scholar and had not had frequent stays in the tropical forest. The vector, Psychodopygus intermedius, had crepuscular and nocturnal activities and an anth rophylic and eurytope behavior. It thus seerns that the disease is being transmitted at home and/or around th e home, ratber than in the forest. The professional character (forest wcrking ) of the disease is seemingly not predominant in the localities studied.
