Abstract
The variability in results of quantitative coprological examinations by the Kato-Katz thick-smear method was measured in 11 patients from a bilharziasis endemic area. Ali patients were infected by Schistosoma mansoni as shown by laboratory tests and they had not been subjected to specific therapy. During four weeks, stool specimens were daily co1!ected from each patient. Four thick-smear slides of each stool specimen were prepared. Each smear was examined by four technicians who did not know which preparation they were examining. The total number of S. mansoni eggs laid by each patient was determined. The results were subjected to regression analysis which showed a significant difference among the rates of eggs eliminated daily by a given patient. However, the quantitative data, but not the qualitative data, furnished by the technicians varied significant1y among them.
