Abstract

The occurrence of invasive Escherichia coli was disclosed in stool specimens collected in São Paulo City, Brazil, during the period from June 1978 to December 1980. Thirty two strains were isolated which belonged to the serogroups: 028 a,c (37.6%); 0136 (18.7%); 0124 (15.6%); 0152 (12.5%); 029 (9.4%); 0143 (6.2%). Double infections were observed on six occasions: E. coli 0136 + E. coli 0143; E. coli 0136 + E. coli 0127K63; E. coli 0,28a,c + E. coli 086:K61; E. coli 0124 + S. oranienburg; E. coli 029 + S. agona; E. coli 0152 + Salmonella typhi.
