Abstract

A method for detectíng mercury residues, specially ín físh, is described herein. The method is based on the destruction of the organic material with sulfuric and nitric acíds, being this operation catalysed by titanium dioxide, estraction of mercury by a solution of ditizone in carbon tetrachloride in heavy acid medi um, and verification of the absorbance rate at 490 nm in a spectrophotometer. 10 samples of fresh water fishes and 109 of salt water fishes were analysed and as a result it was detected the presence of mercury in 4 of the former and 27 of the latter.
All positive samples and 50% of the negative ones were also analysed through atomic absorption spectrophotometry, and a complete consonance was observed in the results.
